What is The "M" Technique

The "M" Technique is a registered method of touch suitable for almost everyone, even the very fragile or those for whom massage is inappropriate. It is a series of stroking movements performed in a set sequence at set pressure. It is gentle and soothing and has been described as "physical hypnotherapy".

It differs from conventional massage in three fundamental ways:-

1) Structure - The "M" Technique follows a set protocol - each movement and sequence is done in a distinctive pattern that is never modified.

2) Repetition of strokes - each stroke is repeated three times - the rationale for this set form of repetition is simple - to build confidence and remove anxiety from the receiver. The first time a stroke is performed, the receiver will pay attention to what is being done; the second time the receiver recognises the movement; the third time the receiver know what is going to happen and begins to relax.

3) Pressure and Speed - The "M" Technique uses a set pressure. On a scale of 0 to 10 where 0 is no pressure and 10 is crushing pressure, The "M" Technique pressure remains at 3. Conventional massage alters the pressure depending on the situation.

The "M" Technique was created by Dr Jane Buckle when she worked as a critical care nurse at the National Heart Hospital in London. It is used widely in hospitals throughout the USA and in 15 hospices in this country to help with pain relief and to calm the terminally ill.

In 1996, The "M" Technique was tested in a medical laboratory at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Centre, New York. The "M" Technique was applied to the feet of volunteer medical students and a profound relaxation effect was measured using an 8 lead ECG machine attached to a heart variation monitor.
